Do your students know that Texas has an official:

  • Air Force (Commemorative Air Force)?
  • Bread (Pan de Campo)?
  • Health Nut (Pecan)?
  • Snack (Tortilla Chips/Salsa)?
  • Cobbler (Peach Cobbler)?
  • Cooking Implement (Cast Iron Dutch Oven)?

The Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) has just launched the Texas State Symbols website that lists all the state’s symbols, along with the picture of each symbol and a reference to the legislation that launched the symbol into Texas officialdom.

TSLAC also posts the list of Official Capital Designations, of which there are currently 95. These include the “Alligator Capital” (Anahauc), “Storybook Capital” (Abilene), “Horned Lizard Capital (Kenedy) and “Rodeo Capital” (Mesquite).
