TEA Releases School Year 2022-23 Bus Accident Data

The TEA has just released its Bus Accident Reporting System (BARS) data for School Year 2022-23.

A total of 978 (81 percent) of the ISDs and charters that submitted the info to TEA collectively reported:

  • A total of 1,634 school bus related accidents. This continues a three-year upward trend in the number of accidents involving all types of school buses (traditional school buses, multifunction school activity buses, school activity buses and motor buses).

  • No school bus related accident deaths to bus drivers, passengers or pedestrians.

  • School bus related injuries to:
    • 98 bus drivers (extent of injuries not reported).

    • Injuries to 414 students and adult passengers in school buses:
      • 6 students with serious injuries and 384 students with minor injuries.

      • 3 adults with serious injuries and 21 adults with minor injuries.

    • 20 pedestrian injuries (extent of injuries not reported).

Incomplete Data
Although annual reporting of school bus accident data is required — via a state law and a TEA rule — the response rate has never been even close to 100 percent. For the latest report, 233 (19 percent) of the 1,211 ISDs and charters failed to submit the required report.

The reported info also contains data on accidents occurring on buses that were either equipped — or not equipped — with passenger seat belts.

  • Note: For additional info, please see the graphics on this page and the TEA’s Bus Accident Reporting System web page.

*Number of deaths include those that occurred to students and adults (including drivers) while on school buses — and to pedestrians who died as a result of school bus related accidents.
