UIL Gets New Home on UT Austin’s Organizational Chart — Thanks to State’s DEI Ban

The state-law ban on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives at public higher-ed entities has resulted in UT Austin transferring the UIL out of the league’s long-time organizational slot at the university.

The league will now be housed under the university’s Governmental Affairs and Initiatives division. For many years, the league’s organizational home has been under UT Austin’s Division of Campus and Community Engagement (DCCE).

No further details were provided.

The UIL Legislative Council Finance Committee is expected to be briefed on the matter during the committee’s May 9 meeting to take the first step toward adopting a budget (that must ultimately be approved by UT Austin) for the league for the upcoming state fiscal year that begins Sept. 1, 2024.

In addition, oversight of UT Austin’s two charter schools (University of Texas Elementary Charter and University of Texas Charter) was transferred from DCCE to the university’s College of Education.
