2024 H-E-B Excellence in Education Award Winners Announced

Statewide winners in the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards program were announced during a May 5 ceremony in Houston.

A total of $480,000 in cash awards and grants were awarded to two ISDs, a school board, an early childhood center, six teachers, two school counselors and two principals.

The school district affiliated winners were:

  • Large School District: Galena Park ISD, $100,000.
  • Small School District: Gregory-Portland ISD, $50,000.
  • School Board: Plainview ISD, $25,000.
  • Early Childhood: M. Rivas Primary Discover Academy (Donna ISD), $25,000.

Individual awards:

  • Rising Star (Elementary): Michelle Cavazos, Sanchez Elementary, McAllen ISD.
  • Rising Star (Secondary): Amanda Byars, Young Women’s Leadership Academy at Booker T. Washington, Midland ISD.
  • Leadership (Elementary): Shelley Jeoffroy, Brown Elementary, Irving ISD.
  • Leadership (Secondary): Christian De La Cruz, Tompkins High School, Katy ISD.
  • Lifetime Achievement (Elementary): Veronica Stapper, Glenmore Elementary, San Angelo ISD.
  • Lifetime Achievement (Secondary): Melba Tijerina, Weslaco (ISD) High School.
  • Counselor (Elementary): Roxanne McCabe, Houston Elementary, Galena Park ISD.
  • Counselor (Secondary): Julie Minnis, Garcia Middle School, Northside ISD.
  • Principal (Elementary): Michelle Fine, Glenn Elementary, Northside ISD.
  • Principal (Secondary): Amanda Ramos, Sellers Middle School, Garland ISD.

Since 2002, the program has awarded more than $13 million in cash and grants to Texas teachers and schools, and is the largest of its kind in Texas and the nation.
