Proposed UIL Rule Would Change Playoff Structure in Five Sports to Mirror Football Postseason Split Divisions

The UIL has posted a proposed rule change that — if adopted this summer — would allow for split division playoff structures for five sports (in various conferences) in a format mirroring the current split-division football playoff formats.

The change would create two state championship brackets for teams advancing through the postseason — for:

  • 2A-6A volleyball, softball and baseball.
  • 4A-6A soccer.
  • 1A-6A basketball.

The rule change, if approved by the UIL Legislative Council on June 11 (and then by the education commissioner) would take effect on Aug. 1, 2024.
