Gov. Abbott Prohibits Texas Public College Tuition and Fee Increases for Upcoming Biennium
Gov. Greg. Abbott announced today that he sent a letter to Texas public colleges and universities prohibiting college tuition increases in the upcoming biennium (academic years 2025-26 and 2026-27).
The governor cited inflation and other economic pressures on families as the reason for his directive — and the fact a bill he signed into law that froze increases in undergraduate tuition and fees for both the 2023-24 and 2024-25 year is expiring.
“As this tuition freeze expires, let me be clear: I will not support any tuition increase at any public higher education institution in the upcoming biennium,” the governor said.
The governor said he has spoken to all the state’s university system boards of regents, whose members agreed with his position.
