Settlement Ends Paxton’s “Critical Race Theory” Lawsuit Against Coppell ISD

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced Tuesday (May 6) that he has resolved a lawsuit against Coppell ISD after the district voluntarily took measures to ensure that unlawful critical race theory (CRT) will not be taught in its classrooms.

According to Paxton:
- CISD disavowed radical critical race theory and committed that CRT will not be taught anywhere in the district.
- CISD communicated to teachers and staff the legal requirements banning critical race theory and the importance of being fully compliant with Texas law.
A judge in Dallas County reportedly granted a joint “notice of nonsuit” last week, effectively dismissing the litigation.
Background
Paxton sued CISD in March 2025 seeking to stop the ISD from incorporating CRT and other non-approved curriculum into classrooms in violation of state law.
In response to the state’s allegations, CISD sought sanctions against the attorney general’s office, saying Paxton’s accusations were based on two-year-old, undercover videos released by Accuracy in the Media that were “heavily edited and manipulated so to be grossly misleading.”
- Note: News of the suit’s dismissal came a day after Paxton announced he is suing Austin ISD on similar allegations of teaching CRT, allegations that also reportedly stemmed from an undercover Accuracy in the Media video.
