The TEA received no applicants for fast-tracked charter approvals during the latest (Generation 31) charter selection process.

This means that the State Board of Education (SBOE) won’t be voting on whether to veto any High-Performing Entity (HPE) charter applicants approved by the education commissioner in January 2026 (based on the initial Oct. 10 application deadline) or in April 2026 (based on the second/final Nov. 21 application deadline).

“Regular Cycle”

Meanwhile, eighteen “regular cycle” Generation 31 charter applicants are vying to be approved as new charter districts to open no earlier than SY 2027-28, with campuses proposed in the Houston, D/FW, Austin, Longview and West Texas areas of the state, TEA staff told SBOE members last month (article).

The process will culminate at the June 2026 SBOE meeting, with the board having its one opportunity to veto any applicant on the commissioner’s final charter list, to be announced by late May 2026.

The TEA will eventually post all Generation 31 applications here (input Gen_31 in the search field).
