U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals
Ruling:
An Hispanic-American ex-ISD teacher’s racial discrimination claim against his former district fails because he couldn’t show that he was treated less favorably than a similarly situated employee outside his protected class under nearly identical circumstances.

  • Joe Martin Bravo v. Dallas ISD, No. 25-10982 ($). Issued June 1, 2026. Ordered “published.”
Background

Joe Martin Bravo, a middle-aged Hispanic-American teacher of Mexican descent, began teaching career and technical education at Quintanilla Middle School within Dallas ISD (DISD) in 2015. For nearly seven years, his record was uneventful — favorable evaluations, annual contract renewals, no disciplinary issues.

That changed in April 2022 — when six students accused him of making racially insensitive remarks about their future educational and career prospects.
