Veteran Legislator/Ex-Superintendent to Head TASB

The Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) has tapped veteran legislator and former superintendent Gary VanDeaver, R-New Boston, to be its next executive director.

TASB’s announcement came the day after VanDeaver submitted his resignation from the Texas Legislature to the governor, to be effective at the end of the business day on Monday (Sept. 21, 2026).

VanDeaver officially assumes the executive director position on Oct. 1, 2026.

VanDeaver had previously announced he was not running for re-election in November for another term in the House. He was first elected to the House for a term beginning in January 2015.

Before that, he had accumulated more than three decades in education, including as superintendent of New Boston ISD.
