Paxton “Commands” Most Public Schools to Post Ten Commandments

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Monday (Aug. 25, 2025) issued a statement directing all Texas public school districts not enjoined by ongoing litigation to display donated or purchased copies of the Ten Commandments in all their classrooms as of the Sept. 1 effective date of implementing legislation SB10.

“From the beginning, the Ten Commandments have been irrevocably intertwined with America’s legal, moral, and historical heritage,” said Paxton, adding:

“Schools not enjoined by ongoing litigation must abide by SB10 and display the Ten Commandments. The woke radicals seeking to erase our nation’s history will be defeated. I will not back down from defending the virtues and values that built this country.”

Paxton’s statement follows a preliminary injunction by a federal judge in San Antonio earlier this month (article) temporarily blocking the implementation of SB10 by the 11 ISDs that were sued by 16 parents of various religious backgrounds who were represented by the ACLU and other religious freedom organizations.

Paxton is appealing the judge’s preliminary injunction order, which is applicable only to the Alamo Heights, North East, Austin, Cypress-Fairbanks, Lackland, Lake Travis, Fort Bend, Houston, Dripping Springs, Plano, and Northside (Bexar County) districts.

Note: An email version of Paxton’s statement listed only nine districts for which the judge’s order applies, omitting Houston ISD and Austin ISD.
